There are more than 1,000 active cases of COVID-19 among Missouri prison inmates, and a staff member at the Tipton Correctional Center is the second employee of the Department of Corrections to die of the disease, a central Missouri television station reported Tuesday.

KMIZ-TV in Columbia reported that Tim Cutt of the Missouri Corrections Officers Association was informed of the death about noon Tuesday. According to the state prison system website tracking COVID-19, there are 18 active cases among staff and 61 active cases among inmates in the Moniteau County prison. There have been 29 cases overall among staff and 92 among prisoners in Tipton.

Overall, there were 1,009 active cases among inmates and 373 active cases among staff at 22 facilities included in the corrections report. Prior to the death reported Tuesday, there had been one staff death and four inmate deaths attributed to COVID0-19.

The Department of Health and Senior Services reported 1,244 new COVID-19 infections statewide on Wednesday morning and 26 additional deaths. The report continues the string of days, dating to Oct. 6, where at least 1,000 new cases have been reported, with the only interruption a three-day period while the state was fixing its reporting system.

There was at least one new case in 103 of 117 reporting jurisdictions on Wednesday. The 7-day positive rate on newly tested individuals stood at 21 percent on Wednesday, with 10 counties reporting a positive rate above 50 percent.

The highest rate was in Holt County in northwest Missouri. Out of a population of a little over 4,000, Holt has recorded 111 cases, including 31 so far this month.
